THE BIRTH OF HIP HOP

The birth of Hip Hop
Love Bug Star Ski is the one that was using the words hip hop as a way to get the people to dance when he DJ'd at places like the Disco Fever.
But, In 1982, Afrika Bambaataa was the one that took the words "Hip Hop" and turned them in to an umbrella name for the 4 elements consisting of Bboy, DJ, Emcee, and Graffiti. That was so that he had a way of describing what was going on with in out scene.... before 1982 the term hip hop didnt exist as an umbrella name for the four elements... or... your in denial and believe herc is the father of hip hop...
with respect to Herc..he was innovative for the merry go round.. extending the breaks for the dancers to get down to which is where the term beat boy/break boy came from... but not for doing park jams ...he was continuing what was being done already by previous djs from different borroughs....like grandmaster flowers (also including Pete DJ Jones, Maboya, and DJ Plummer)....

to my knowledge from 1972 herc was doing his thing on the west side of the bronx and shortly after (1973) bambaataa started doing his own jams on the east/south side of the bronx.... but bam is responsible for uniting black and puerto rican gangs... ..bam was instrumental in taking the spades and coverting it to a universal organiztion embracing everyone in peace founding the zulu nation... from the zulunation comes the bboy crew zulu kings...
and by the time of the early 1980's bambaataa had a hand in producing music incorporating the sound of electro music into rap music with planet rock ...hip hop was born right around that time.....and everything done before didnt have the label he gave the culture until then...
in 1982 bambaataa took all those elements and said the urban movement occuring in nyc/bronx was a culture called hip hop....

so to the point when you had the elements out there independent of each other.. its not until you reach the point of origin when someone gives a label to something that it then becomes the starting point... (whether it be a culture, dance or a dance move)... and yes luvbug starski said "hip hop" to get the crowd moving.... but he didnt give the name to the culture of those 4 elements that would later be called hip hop culture...that was all bambaataa.......

.... this is what trac2 always has said...

The History of Hip Hop...
Letter to the Hip Hop Pioneers and so-called Hip Hop Historians. I'm tired of pioneers that will change what they say about the history when their pockets are empty. I challenge anyone to find a flyer that says Hip Hop on it, before 1982. Hip Hop as a word existed. I agree with that. But Hip Hop being defined as a culture or movement with principles and direction was not established until 1982. And that was established by Afrika Bambaataa. I understand that we were all doing our different elements prior to 1982. And some did more of the elements then others. But that wasn't because we were following the idea of a movement or culture. It's because, it what we were in to, while we were growing up in the hood with little to do in terms of activities. I will give Kool Herc the props for striking the match, but in no way did he have intentions of lighting a fire, and he was never our community leader with ideas of unifying people under the banner that became Hip Hop. The bottom line is that Hip Hop is NOT 40 YEARS OLD! There is enough documentation out there to prove my point. I own some of it, and have the articles that show when the word Hip Hop started to show up as we know it today. These articles show where and when those words were and weren't being used. I know that no one is perfect with the history, but let's not get it twisted. The reason why we celebrate Kool Herc is because he did something that inspired Afrika Bambaataa. Who in turn became the visionary and leader that took the principles (Peace, Unity, Love and Having Fun) of the Zulu Nation and applied them to what eventually became known as Hip Hop. And to Afrika Bambaataa. Stop telling us to honor a man that doesn't honor what you did for the Hip Hop game. You ESTABLISHED IT and we know this to be true, because we all followed you! In the words of Maury. "In the case of Baby Hip Hop "You Are The Father"! Peace, Crazy Legs Rock Steady Crew

ZULU KING CHOLLY ROCK
The term was originally a condescending term to describe the music, dance (specifically, B-Boys) and rap cadence associated with our style of partying... This was to differentiate it from the standard 'Black "Disco" (really R&B) Djs & MCs of the day... Pete DJ Jones, Grand Master Flowers, Cool DJ Rock (Rocky G) and the Come Off Crew and MCs like Starski (who had not yet merged the styles) JJ the Disco King, KC the Prince of Soul, Eddie Cheba, etc... Even Kool DJ Dee and his partner "Tyrone the Mixologist", were Disco DJs who happened to play B-Boy music or "Breakbeats" for us when they played in the park or 123... But their real bread and Butter was playing in the clubs, and they were the ONLY DJs associated with Hip Hop at that time from that neighborhood (Soundview) that were playing in the clubs (Hotel Diplomat, Constellation, Barney Googles, Nel Gwens, Reflections etc.)

Anthony G. Horne It was created as a negative term by the people who did not like our music or style Victor... It was connected because we (B-Boys) bounced around.... I guess like rabbits to them... So they called our music hippity hop music... Later on MCs such as Cowboy and, more famously, Starski, who by this time had become Love Bug Starski, when he was rocking at the Renaissance ballroom (better known as the Renny!) in Harlem and shortened it to "hip hop" as a rap cadence ... As the popularity of the music and culture grew, the genre became known as "Hip Hop"... While the BamBaataa story makes for nice reading and such, the genre was already being called Hip Hop by that time!
